How the Major Taylor Cycling Club of Dayton (MTCCD) Began:

In the summer of 2007, over a cup of coffee at the North River Coffee House, the idea to start a new cycling club was developed; this idea was the brainchild of Judge Bill Littlejohn and Marc Harris.

Marc had relayed to the Judge his experence riding in the late 70's & 80's with a group of African-Americans that called themselves "Major Taylors' Killer Bees".  ...No, they were not a gang, nor were they anti-social; they were a group of cyclists with a passion for riding that defended their right to ride legally in the streets during a time when "share the road" was not a commonly used phrase.  After discussing the merits of such a club, the Judge and Marc agreed to start a new cycling club with the same spirit of the Killer Bees and in honor of Major Taylor.  The club would organize group rides, promote bicycle advocacy, and offer educational programs related to bicycling and bicycling history.

So through information passed in the coffee house, in churches, and all about town word spread about the formation of a local cycling club.  Founding members of MTCCD include: Joyce-Jones Gourdine, Charles Love, Deirdre Logan, and Carol Johnson.  The continued success of MTCCD is due to the dedicated efforts of this core group.

On August 12, 2007, the first MTCCD ride brought together more than 20 riders.

MTCCD Today:

MTCCD is made up of a friendly group of female riders with a diverse range of sizes and experience. Accordingly, all riders of all riding styles are welcome to join the club.  MTCCD's goal in this open membership is to two-fold; to encourage physical fitness, and to develop the riding abilities of all members no matter their initial skill level.

Currently MTCCD is an adults-only club, and accepts members who are 18 and over.  Helmets are required on all club rides.
